2021 Berlin Security Conference: Germany shows interest in Apache gunships

Germany is asking for information about the Apache when considering its future attack helicopter plans. (American armies)

Germany has already expressed interest in the Boeing AH-64 Apache, and has sent a request for information (RFI) to the US government regarding armed helicopters.

In a speech to Janes at the security conference in the German capital, a senior company official confirmed that he had received an RFI from the Bundeswehr and had responded.

"Just before Covid [early 2020], the German government asked the U.S. government to provide information related to Apache-this is an RFI. The U.S. government responded to this," said Michael, Boeing Vice President, Defense, Space and Security. Michael Hostetter said, adding that due to the ongoing pandemic, he has remained silent on this issue ever since.

When serving in Italy, AW169 will soon be acquired by Austria. (Leonardo)

Italy and Austria have signed an intergovernmental (G2G) agreement to sell and purchase 18 Leonardo AW169 multi-purpose helicopters for the Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer).

The implementation phase of the agreement was signed by the Minister of Defense Lorenzo Gherini and the Minister of Defense of Austria Claudia Tanner at the Italian Ministry of Defense in Rome on December 2. The procurement signing in mid-January 2022 paved the way. Austria has set aside 300 million euros (340 million US dollars) to 400 million euros for this plan.

According to the Italian National Armament Agency (ARMAERO), the contract will cover 6 helicopters with AW169B configuration and up to 12 AW169MA helicopters that may be armed. Spare parts, training, support and other items will be included in the sale. The agreement also includes options for another six AW169B and another 12 AW169MA; however, it does not say how long this option will remain in effect.

The Australian Army established a command unit on December 2 to optimize its aviation assets and support better coordination between the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Rick Burr stated at a ceremony in Canberra that the new Army Aviation Command will enhance the service’s resilience and adaptability and ensure that its training system is "flexible and modern."

He added: "Army aviation capabilities have been adjusted under their own command and the Army aviation has been optimized to better support land, amphibious, and special operations."

The new unit will be supported by the 16th Aviation Brigade and the Army Aviation Training Center, which join the unit from the Army Corps Command. The new command also includes the assets of the Australian Army Aviation.

The force will be commanded by Major General Stephen Jobson. He said that changes in the Army’s aviation command and control structure will "simplify [its] helicopter management."
