Duluth, the only way to the Wabegon Bar surrounded by the Superior Forest, is about 15 miles southwest of Duluth, through Minnesota.

The Wisconsin State Line intersects with a lane about 100 yards from the Minnesota Highway. 23. This is an odd geographical feature of the 80-year-old North Woods-chic Bar and Grill, and it is also the beginning of a conversation with a solid bar stool.

"This is the only bar in Wisconsin that can only be reached from the Minnesota side," said owner John Hartwick. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minnesota closed restaurants in the fall of 2020 , Which allowed them to have a fun time. And Wisconsin institutions remain open. "It's uninterrupted madness, good, bad or other."

People like good bar burgers. Here are some outstanding figures in the dual port.

Butter and garlic salt are one of the secrets of Mike Ronning's special burger mix, but the nearly 50-year-old grill hidden in the small bar kitchen may be related to seasonings. The buns made by Johnson's Bakery in Lincoln Park put lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and beef together. For more than 40 years, Round-Up has been a family-run establishment in downtown Duluth. It was filled with framed and autographed photos of country stars; Ronning used the pandemic shutdown to make some internal improvements.

"We have been doing the same thing here for a long time, and it seems to work," Ronin said. He is right. It is true. Jana Hollingsworth/janah@startribune.com Jana Hollingsworth/janah@startribune.com Bacon cheeseburgers from other bars and grills in the Woodland community of Duluth.

In this cozy bar on the outskirts of Duluth, no one doubts Jucy Lucy's creation, only a tribute. Melty American adds 80-20 coarsely ground burger mixture to the handmade classic burger, which is always sealed before the first bite. Breeze Inn is another historic hotel. It was built in 1949. It was originally a house and soon turned into a bar. It has won numerous local Hamburg awards, but the northern forest environment, weekly live music performances and a child-friendly atmosphere are the most important. Co-owner Kate Wagoner would not disclose the source of the local beef because "we don't want others to use it!"

Deep in the Woodland neighborhood of Duluth, this newer building bar is a bit rustic. But the rich bacon cheeseburger with ripe red tomatoes and crunchy romaine lettuce is of tavern quality. (And they have a bar bingo game and they won.)

The southern tip of Superior in Wisconsin is Gronk's, which is often overlooked and anchored by the cheaper and more famous Superior counterparts. Gronk's is filled with wooden tables and many beer signs to get to know its audience. In the long list of creative options, it's hard to resist the Bacon Beer Cheeseburger. The service is also very cordial.

Loved by mountain bikers using the nearby Mission Creek trail or Mont du Lac ski resort (also in Superior), Wabegon began in Peter's Supper Club in the 1950s. John Hartwick bought the store in 2017, focusing on patties, brioche bread and crinkle pickles.

"You must have basic knowledge," he said.

This is a very satisfying burger. While you are there, try "wabby balls," a deep-fried breakfast and dinner mixture made of hash browns, cheese, cream and bacon.
