Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

The Hilti Nuron Reciprocating Saw is an excellent choice to replace your 12-amp corded saw and its solid ergonomics earn some major points from us. When you have lighter or overhead demo work, it's the way to go for professionals on Hilti's Nuron system.

The team over at Hilti pumped out some really great new tools on the Nuron battery system, but there are also a few familiar faces in the bunch. Among them is the Hilti Nuron SR 6-22 cordless reciprocating saw, which is the updated model from the Hilti SR 6-A22. We wanted to see how the Nuron upgrade helps it compare to other saws in the same class.

We grabbed a fresh Nuron B 22-85 battery and got ready to run the saw through a few of our benchmark tests. The saw has a slower 2600 SPM top speed to go along with a longer 1 1/4-inch stroke length. Most cordless models hang out around 3000 SPM with a 1 1/8-inch stroke rate. We were anxious to see how the motor would translate that into cutting performance.

For comparison, I brought out the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2721-20 Sawzall and Bosch GSA18V-125 to run side-by-side. Milwaukee’s 2721 is at the top of the charts in the 12-amp replacement group and the Bosch competes in the 15-amp replacement class. To keep things fair, we used a 4.0Ah battery in all three saws and left orbital action off on the Bosch saw.

What we learned from this test is that Hilti competes very well as a replacement for your 12-amp corded saw. It’s not at the top of the charts and it could benefit from an orbital action mode, but it’s far from the bottom of the pack and is a confident cutter.

Hilti has some of the best vibration control technology thanks to its Active Vibration Reduction system. In this instance, AVR does a fine job of making the job easier on your arms.

While making the cuts in both wood and metal, we did notice less vibration in our hands compared to other saws I’ve used in the past. Keep in mind, it’s impossible to completely eliminate all vibration simply due to the violent nature of the tool itself but we think Hilti did a pretty good job.

From a comfort stance, it’s hard to complain about this saw. The rear handle is nicely rounded and contours well to my medium-sized hands. Hilti covered the front grip with a soft rubber overmold for additional comfort and grip security. The saw has a slim design running down the front handle, making it easier and more comfortable to grip, especially when you’re making longer cuts.

From tip to tail, the SR 6-22 measures 18.75 inches and it weighs 8.56 pounds with the recommended B 22-85 battery. The saw has a really good balance and feel, even if you decide to go with one of the larger Nuron batteries.

Hilti moves the blade lock off of the shaft and onto the outside of the housing where it’s much more convenient to use.

One thing that could make it even better is a spring-loaded blade ejection. This would make blade changes even faster and let you avoid touching a hot blade.

To date, Hilti is the only brand we’ve seen design a dust port for their reciprocating saws. It makes a lot of sense considering they rate it for cutting thick metal and masonry. If that’s something you want to add, the Hilti SR DRS dust extractor attachment is $14.50.

On the side of the front handle, there’s an access point. You can grab Hilti cutting assist accessory and install it there. The accessory has a vice system that grabs materials and pivots on the install point to help you make stable, straight cuts. It’s another accessory unique to Hilti that we haven’t seen from other brands. Check with your Hilti dealer if you’d like more information.

The Hilti Nuron SR 6-22 reciprocating saw retails for $249 as a bare tool. Kit pricing varies because Hilti allows you to customize the battery and charger configuration based on your needs.

Hilti also offers fleet pricing if you’re looking to outfit the entire tool crib. This service will run you $17.50 per month and helps you stay on top of maintenance schedules. This also includes no-cost repairs and Hilti’s top-notch customer service.

Keep in mind Hilti’s 20-2-1 program: 20-year warranty, 2-year free service, and 1-day turnaround on repairs and service.

The Hilti Nuron Reciprocating Saw is an excellent choice to replace your 12-amp corded saw and its solid ergonomics earn some major points from us. When you have lighter or overhead demo work, it’s the way to go for professionals on Hilti’s Nuron system.
