Holmesglen Institute is a leading diversified TAFE (Technical and Continuing Education) college operating in Victoria, Australia, and will purchase two highly advanced fifth-generation CYBERMINE simulators to train underground equipment operators.

ThoroughTec Simulation’s Sandvik DS421-C and DD420 simulators will enhance Holmesglen’s training services in mining and tunneling. These simulators will be deployed in Australia's first Victoria Tunnel Centre in Chadstone, Victoria (Drummond Street Campus), which provides professional training for workers in the fields of mining, construction and tunnel engineering.

Dr. Ross Digby, deputy director of the Holmesglen Center for Energy and Infrastructure, stated that there is a high demand for innovative immersive training.

"Holmesglen's new simulator will teach underground workers practical skills in a safe, controllable and highly realistic environment, recreating various field conditions and scenarios," he said.

Joel Leatt-Hayter, business development manager at ThoroughTec Simulation, said the training simulator will help workers familiarize themselves with machinery widely used in Australia.

"Sandvik DD420 drilling rig is a very popular tunnel drilling rig, used and verified worldwide, while Sandvik DS421-C is a rock reinforcement bolting machine for professional cement grouting and bolt installation ," Leatt-Hayter. "Both machines are extremely complex equipment and require a high degree of proficiency to operate safely and effectively."

The CYBERMINE simulator system is very effective in preparing operators for the challenges and complexities of real-world mining, enabling operators to hone their skills in a controlled and safe environment while being exposed to various scenarios. Many scenarios are untrainable Holmesglen's research says, otherwise, you can better prepare for underground conditions.

"For example, the operator may be exposed to a stuck drill or even a vehicle fire, which is obviously difficult to replicate safely on actual equipment," Leatt-Hayter said. "It is essential that the operator accurately position the drill and boom to ensure that the accurate pattern is drilled and the best blasting effect is achieved. It is also important to apply the feed pressure, speed and impact correctly so as not to affect the drill. Maximize work efficiency in the case of column life."

Holmesglen Institute has established strong relationships with industry partners to develop and provide customized training for workers at its Drummond Street campus.

"Our goal is to provide industry partners with the training solutions they need for their projects and create the best learning experience for workers," said Dr. Digby. "The simulator provides a lot of flexibility for custom training. Over time, we will also be able to meet changing project requirements."

The two simulators delivered to the Holmesglen Institute will be deployed on the CYBERMINE 5 Base Unit, which has a full HD laser projection display, 5.1 surround sound and an advanced instructor station to develop customized training exercises and monitor students in real time. The system also has comprehensive reporting and reporting functions to further improve students' skill development and knowledge retention.
