The digital collection of the Library of Congress contains billions of items.

By preserving digital information on various topics, the library is protecting important historical glimpses. These materials include essays by 23 American presidents (including Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence), street interviews after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, recordings of North American English dialects from 1887 to 1914, and baseball cards.

ShareAmerica asked Kate Zwaard, director of digital strategy, and Trevor Owens, director of digital content management, to describe some of the projects they found interesting.

"Different cities and different organizations provide phone books in different ways at different points in time," Owens said. For example, this series shows how cities like Los Angeles can be broken down into smaller communities based on phone books published over time.

Free digital collections can be used online by people all over the world.
